Under The Tuscan Sun - Italian Movie
Trips
Based on a recently published autobiography, an
American writer moves to Italy after a painful divorce and buys a villa
in Tuscany -- slowly learning from the astonishing countryside as she
refurbishes her new home.
Locations in Italy:
Arezzo
Arezzo is a wealthy medieval town of gold
factories and antique flea markets. Not only was the musical scale
invented here, but Arezzo is also the town where the poet Petrarch first
set down his little sonnets. You'll want to find Piero Della Francesca's
stunning series of frescoes depicting the history of Christ's true cross
and detailed portrayals of seminal Christian allegories.
region name: Tuscany
Cortona
Now a small, serene town set in the hills, Cortona may be one of the
oldest towns in Italy. The fact that it was a major Etruscan capital may
explain why a large Etruscan museum and Etruscan art gallery are here
and why Cortona is the home of the Etruscan Academy, where students of
history continue to study the civilization which probably bequeathed us
our modern Latin alphabet, among other things. With incredible views of
Lake Trasimeno and an active artist community, it's also an excellent
place to relax.
region name: Tuscany
Florence
Florence is the birthplace of the Renaissance, ignited and advanced by
the long-reigning Medici family and created by the artists they helped
finance, from Donatello to Michelangelo. In a few square kilometers,
from the central duomo to the ornate, mercantile bridge marking the
riverfront, you'll find more masterpieces of Renaissance architecture
and art than possibly anywhere on earth.
region name: Tuscany
Montepulciano
Montepulciano is a high, heavily fortified Renaissance city with
spectacular views of Tuscany. Among the medieval walls and cypress trees
you'll find a fine Renaissance plaza, many excellent opportunities to
enjoy the town's famous Vino Nobile wines along with international music
played in festivals throughout the summer.
region name: Tuscany
Positano
Artists and expatriate authors made this steep cliffside fishing village
famous for its white Moorish houses and incredible views over emerald
waters. Positano's compact and astonishing architectural
accomplishments, combined with a relaxing and upscale piazza life are an
excellent base for short visits to the island of Capri.
region name: Campania
Salerno
This tranquil port city is where the U.S. Army first landed forces in
WWII. Along the Salerno seafront promenade you'll find a cathedral with
the remains of St. Matthew along with Greek artifacts sampled from
nearby Paestum -- a small town renowned for a greater concentration of
well-preserved Greek temples than you'll find anywhere but Sicily. You
can read more about Paestum in the works of early Romantic writers, who
rediscovered the area and made it famous.
